Term Life Insurance in Minnesota: What You Need to Know

term life insurence

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, which makes it a good time to talk about something many of us would rather put off: What would happen financially to the people we love if we weren’t here tomorrow?

It’s not a particularly fun question. But it’s an important one.

What Is Term Life Insurance?

Term life insurance is one of the simplest forms of life insurance. You choose an amount of coverage and a period of time, or “term,” during which the policy provides protection, subject to the terms of the policy.

If the insured person dies while the policy is in force, the policy’s death benefit is paid to the designated beneficiary or beneficiaries.

Unlike many forms of permanent life insurance, term insurance generally does not build cash value. Its primary purpose is straightforward: providing life insurance protection for a specific period of time.

Why Do People Buy Term Life Insurance?

Think about the financial responsibilities you have today.

A mortgage. Car payments. Everyday household expenses. Childcare. College plans. Other debts. And perhaps most importantly, the income your household relies on every month.

If you died unexpectedly, some of those responsibilities wouldn’t disappear.

Life insurance can help provide financial resources for the people you leave behind. Depending on a family’s circumstances, a death benefit might be used to help replace lost income, pay a mortgage or other debts, cover childcare or education expenses, or simply give a family some financial breathing room during an incredibly difficult time.

Who Should Consider It?

Life insurance isn’t just something to think about later in life.

If someone depends on you financially, or would experience a financial burden because of your death, it’s worth having the conversation.

That can include parents with young children, married couples, homeowners, business owners, and even younger adults who are beginning to take on financial responsibilities.

And don’t overlook a spouse who doesn’t currently earn an income. Replacing the childcare, transportation, household management, and other work that person provides can create a significant financial need as well.

How Much Life Insurance Do I Need?

There isn’t one number that’s right for everyone.

A good starting point is to consider the financial obligations your family would face without you. That might include your mortgage and other debts, income your household would need to replace, childcare and everyday living expenses, future education expenses, final expenses, and other financial obligations unique to your family.

From there, consider existing resources that could help meet those needs.

The goal isn’t simply to pick a large number. It’s to understand the potential financial gap and determine what type and amount of coverage makes sense for your situation and budget.

The Conversation Matters

At The Lyle Group, we believe people deserve to understand the protection they’re buying.

Life insurance doesn’t need to start with an application or a sales pitch. It can start with a conversation.

What are you trying to protect? Who depends on you? How long is that financial need likely to exist? What coverage do you already have?

Those are the questions that matter.

September may be Life Insurance Awareness Month, but protecting your family is worth thinking about any month of the year.

If you haven’t reviewed your life insurance recently, or you’ve never had the conversation, our team at The Lyle Group would be happy to help you better understand your options.
