Could One Accident Put Everything You've Worked for at Risk?

Why personal umbrella insurance might be one of the most important policies you own.

Most people understand why they need auto and homeowners insurance. You insure your vehicles, protect your home, and carry liability coverage in case something goes wrong.

But here’s a question I often ask our customers:

What happens if you cause an accident and the damages exceed your insurance limits?

It’s a question worth considering, because even responsible people can find themselves facing a lawsuit that puts their savings, income, and financial future at risk.

And that’s where personal umbrella insurance comes in.

A $1 Million Accident: It Could Happen to Anyone

One carrier provides an example that illustrates just how quickly an ordinary accident can become a major financial problem.

Imagine you’re involved in an auto accident that seriously injures another driver. That person is unable to work for six months and files a lawsuit seeking $1 million in damages.

Your auto insurance provides $250,000 in bodily injury liability coverage.

If you’re found responsible for the full $1 million, your auto insurance could cover the first $250,000, leaving you potentially responsible for the remaining $750,000.

That’s not a small financial setback. For most families, it’s a life-changing amount of money.

Now imagine you also carry a $1 million personal umbrella policy.

Depending on the circumstances and policy terms, that umbrella coverage could step in after your auto liability coverage is exhausted and help cover the remaining damages.

That’s the difference an umbrella policy can make.

It’s Not Just About Car Accidents

When I talk with customers about umbrella insurance, many assume it’s something only wealthy people need.

That’s simply not the case.

Consider some everyday situations:

  • Your teenage driver causes an accident. The injuries are serious, and the damages exceed your auto insurance liability limits.
  • Someone is injured at your home. A guest falls, suffers a significant injury, and holds you responsible.
  • Your dog injures someone. A bite or other incident results in medical expenses and a liability claim.
  • A recreational accident occurs. An incident involving a boat or another covered activity leads to a lawsuit.

These aren’t situations anyone plans for. But they illustrate why the liability limits on your existing policies deserve a closer look.

Umbrella coverage can provide additional liability protection for certain covered claims, subject to policy exclusions and requirements.

What Are You Really Protecting?

Think about what you’ve spent your working life building.

Your home. Your savings. Your investments. Your retirement plans. Your ability to provide for your family.

A significant liability judgment could threaten some of those assets and, depending on applicable law, potentially affect future earnings.

An umbrella policy isn’t designed to replace your auto or homeowners insurance. It’s designed to provide an additional layer of liability protection when a covered claim exceeds the limits of your underlying policies.

In other words, you’re not simply protecting what you own today. You’re helping protect the financial future you’ve worked so hard to build.

How Much Does Umbrella Insurance Cost?

This is the part that surprises many of our customers.

Depending on your household, vehicles, drivers, coverage limits, and other factors, a personal umbrella policy can be relatively inexpensive compared with the additional protection it provides.

In some cases, coverage may cost less than $45 per month.

Of course, your actual premium will depend on your individual circumstances, and certain underlying insurance limits may be required.

But when you compare the potential cost of a major liability claim with the cost of additional protection, it’s worth having the conversation.

Why I Personally Recommend Umbrella Insurance

As an insurance agent, I believe one of my most important responsibilities is helping customers recognize risks they may not have considered.

Most of us don’t expect to be involved in a serious accident or face a major lawsuit.

But insurance isn’t about expecting something bad to happen. It’s about being financially prepared if it does.

I’ve worked with customers across Central Minnesota who have spent decades building their financial security. My job is to help make sure their insurance protection keeps pace with what they’ve built.

That’s why I encourage homeowners and families, especially those with teenage drivers, recreational vehicles, or significant assets, to consider personal umbrella coverage.

It’s one of those policies I hope you’ll never need to use. But if you ever do, you’ll be glad we had the conversation.
